It is a pleasure to introduce ourselves at ABA and NTA.

Located in the beautiful northern Black Hills of South Dakota, 15 miles south of Interstate 90, the Black Hills Fort Pierre Railroad Roundhouse is the newest attraction in the mile high city of Lead, South Dakota.

An original railroad roundhouse, built in 1901, the facility opened in November of 2008 after a $2 million restoration that has captured the historic elegance of the Victorian era.

You will be greeted with convenient, spacious parking, a very friendly staff that is attired in authentic Victorian wardrobe that will instantly transport you 100 years back in time. You enter our free Railroad History Center, where artifacts, pictures, a model, large mural and historical video will thrill everyone from the historians to the railroad buff with the story of narrow gauge, mountain railroading that started in 1881.

A highlight of the building is the “Living Map Theater.” This unique one of a kind multi-media presentation tells the story of the Black Hills Gold Rush in a truly breath taking manner. A full color 3D map, 28 feet long and 24 feet deep represents Dakota Territory of 1881. On this map are more than 1,000 colored lights that will take you from place to place. A 13 foot screen then shows you old film, historical pictures and re-enactments of what was happening in those places. Surround sound fills the theater with original music, sound effects and character voices that truly put you in the middle of these historic events. The 40 minute presentation is shown hourly at your discounted group rate of $4.00 per person.

The Roundhouse offers two unique gift shops:

The Vintage Caboose Gift Shoppe with gourmet foods, specialty candies, novelty railroad costume jewelry, fun kitchen items, a kid’s corner and much, much more.

The Good As Gold Gift and Antique Shop has one of a kind local art and craft items, along with two levels of many beautiful antiques.

Both of these shops at the Roundhouse should be on your must-see list.

The elegant vintage dining experience at the Roundhouse Restaurant is complete with a life-size engine, coal car, and dining car on a railroad track that sits beside a waterfall in a room of chandeliers, with scenery passing by on TV’s as you eat your 5-course dinner for a special bus tour rate of $21.95. This dining experience will truly be one to remember. The Roundhouse Restaurant offers a noon buffet –11:30 am – 2:00 pm with different menus daily such as Italian, Mexican, home-style or gourmet.
